From the Wild West heroines in the Women of the American Frontier section, to the early days of the Hollywood empire with Dorothy Arzner, to the modern roads and wilderness of show business with Gia Coppola and Pamela Anderson in The Last Showgirl, this year's American Film Festival invites you to travel alongside exceptional women. We are pleased to announce that the legendary Angelina Jolie will join this prestigious lineup as she portrays the equally iconic Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín's latest film. This screening is made possible through a partnership with Kino Świat, distrubuting the film in Poland.
The 15th AFF is just over three weeks away! Join us at Wrocław’s New Horizons Cinema from November 5-11, and don’t miss the online edition running through November 17. Pablo Larraín has mastered the art of telling stories about extraordinary women. He crafted insightful portraits of the most famous first lady of the United States – Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie, and the most famous duchess – Princess Diana in Spencer. In each of these films, Larraín conjures the spirit of the time while delving into the souls of women who have become symbols – almost monuments – in the public eye. By breaking through the myths surrounding them, he gives voice to these heroines at pivotal moments in their lives (Jackie, just after her husband’s assassination, and Diana, on the verge of separation from Charles). Larraín's latest film offers a similar approach, this time focusing on the world’s most famous opera singer and star – Maria Callas.
In her final days, living in 1970s Paris, Maria Callas reflects on and relives her tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic life story. These are the memoirs of the world’s greatest opera singer, filled with amorous raptures, dazzling performances, glamorous soirées, and encounters with the most prominent figures of her era. Her life included a love affair with Aristotle Onassis – one of the wealthiest men of the time – and meetings with icons like John F. Kennedy. This is the story of a woman who was both supremely confident and incredibly sensitive.
