AFF films honored at the Independent Spirit Awards

16th TAURON American Film Festival: thank you!

The Oscars, the Golden Globes—of course, we are happy when films from our program receive such awards (and we are also happy that good cinema from the US is gaining even more publicity), but our arthouse heart beats much faster during the Independent Spirit Awards ceremony. During yesterday's gala, it beat particularly fast, because as many as four titles that we presented at the TAURON American Film Festival in November ended the evening with awards in their pockets! Our congratulations go to the creators of the films: Sorry, Baby; I'd Kick You If I Could; Chameleon; and The Plague.

The Independent Spirit Awards are one of the most important American awards given to independent film and television creators. The list of categories is short (among other things, the acting awards are gender-neutral), which is why we are all the more delighted with each award. During yesterday's 41st awards ceremony, four titles from the 16th AFF program triumphed:

  • Sorry, Baby, dir. Eva Victor: Best Screenplay (Eva Victor) and Best Supporting Actress (Naomi Ackie);
  • If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, dir. Mary Bronstein: Best Actress (Rose Byrne; an Oscar is coming soon, so take screenshots);
  • Lurker, dir. Alex Russell: award for debut screenplay (Alex Russell);
  • The Plague, directed by Charlie Polinger: best breakthrough performance (Kayo Martin).

For another dose of American independent cinema (which is likely to triumph at the 42nd Independent Spirit Awards), join us this fall for the 17th American Film Festival. We will announce the exact date soon.
