Grandma
The titular grandma (Lily Tomlin) breaks all stereotypes; she serves her granddaughter cookies, but only because she's going to get an abortion. What's more, grandma's broke, fresh off a lesbian break up, and experiencing uncontrollable emotional outbursts. Grandma's one-liners are witty but cruel, while Tomlin emanates extraordinary depth and heart in going from comical to realistically bitter only to surprise audiences by returning to her more subtle side. In effect, we get not only an original comedy where authentic dialogues share the screen with moving moments, but a deeply feminist story about three generations of women, about their differences and shared travails. American critics uniformly praise Tomlin's role; „Rolling Stone's” Peter Travers finds that Tomlin, the sorceress, leaves you dazzled and devastated.
Paul Weitz
He is a screenwriter, director, producer, and off-Broadway playwright. Beginning with his feature-length scriptwriting debut, Antz (1998), he often co-writes scripts with his brother Chris Weitz. Their script for the comedy About a Boy received an Oscar nomination. Weitz also employs his comedic prowess as a director, including in his directorial debut in American Pie.
