Stinking Heaven
A group of perpetual addicts tries to clean up in a small New Jersey commune in the 1990s. Jim and Lucy run the house, a young couple idealistic about their mission, who see the road to health in community, song, shared stories of suffering along with what they deem expurgating improvisation. Just when it seems long-sought harmony settled in among the residents, a new arrival razes the manicured order and tranquility, leading to a tragic finale. Sandy Levine of IndieWire, found the fifth film from New Yorker Nathan Silver, shot with a VHS camera and its characteristic grainy image, reminiscent of Lars von Trier's The Idiots. Silver's Stinking Heaven took part in the 2014 US in Progress fair as part of American Film Festival, as his previous film, Uncertain Terms, also screened that year in the AFF's Spectrum section.
Nathan Silver
Nathan Silver graduated from the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. He made his debut with the short Anecdote at Slamdance, while his latest film Stinking Heaven, which is part of the AFF US in Progress coproduction fair, premiered in Rotterdam. On set Silver loves to improvise, use amateur actors and mix genres. He is influenced by Dostoyevsky, Mike Leigh, Eric Rohmer and Andrzej Żuławski. One of "Filmmaker Magazine's" new faces to watch.
