One of the first real political fiction films: a fictional president, a fictional political party, a fictional presidential election, and a convention that tries to name a candidate. Who will be „the best man”? A seemingly virtuous intellectual, or a ruthless yet energetic populist?
Franklin J. Schaffner was one of the leading television directors of the 1950s. In 1962, he directed A Tour of the White House, a record-breaking program in which First Lady Jackie Kennedy gave viewers a guided tour of the presidential residence. After the success of The Best Man, Schaffner directed his two biggest films: Planet of the Apes and the monumental Patton, said to be President Richard Nixon's favorite film.
