The Dutch Master, dir. Susan Seidelman, Germany, USA 1993, 28'
Behold the power of the female gaze: bored by the routine of her job at a dental office, Teresa (Mira Sorvino) brings a Dutch master’s painting to life and sets her fantasies in motion. Her lunchtime museum visits spark surprise and confusion in others, unease in her fiancé, and in her – excitement and, ultimately, desire.
Sex and the City, dir. Susan Seidelman, S01E01, E05, E10, USA 1998, 76'
On her feet: Manolo Blahnik heels, on her head: a tumble of blonde curls, in her hand: a Cosmopolitan (the drink, not the magazine). Carrie Bradshaw grew into one of the most iconic pop culture heroines of recent decades, although Susan Seidelman imagined her somewhat differently: as a modestly paid, chain-smoking columnist who would never spend a month’s salary on designer shoes. The director envisioned Sex and the City as an amusing yet down-to-earth story, with a tinge of sadness, which is why the three episodes of the show’s first season she directed carry a distinctly different tone from the rest. Even if we remember Carrie mainly as a New York princess, it’s worth recalling that she started out more like a modern-day Cinderella, with a wry, knowing smile on her face instead of a walk-in closet full of couture outfits.
Admission to the event is free: a complimentary ticket can be collected at the festival box office or reserved with a pass/accreditation the day before the event.
After the screening, take part in the Wine and Food Pairing at the Focus Hotel (entry by separate invitations, available at the cinema box office from November 7, limited numbers, adults only).
