Right from the start, Cretton throws us into a scene where drama lurks below the humorous veneer and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final credits – no wonder the script won the Academy Nicholl Fellowship. This story about teens in a correctional center is excellent at dosing emotional nuances and offers a generous amount of empathy without being grimly serious. The film reviews their overwhelming problems mainly through the perspective of Grace (Brie Larson) who runs the center. Her private affairs turn out to be dangerously close to her professional matters in a film that manages to provide a sensitive though not sentimental view of the disadvantaged.
Destin Cretton was born and raised in Maui, Hawaii. He has written and directed several short films including Longbranch: A Suburban Parable (2002), Bartholomew’s Song (2006), Deacon’s Mondays (2007) and Short Term 12, which won the US Jury prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and was short-listed for the 2010 Academy Awards, prompting the director to shoot a feature version. His feature film debut I Am Not a Hipster premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Along with his narrative work, Destin Cretton has also directed two feature-length documentaries: Drakmar: A Vassal’s Journey, which won the Best Documentary Award at the 2006 Comic-Con, and Born Without Arms.
