Mary Dauterman is from Texas, where she studied at the University of Austin. After moving to New York, she worked in advertising for years. She published two books as an illustrator, Dirty Library: Twisted Children's Classics and Folked-Up Fairy tales (2014, with Peter Antosh) and What Are We Even Doing with Our Lives? (2017, with Chelsea Marshall). Her short films, including Wakey Wakey (2019), starring the then-unknown Rachel Sennott, was shown at independent and genre film festivals.
