OBEX

Albert Birney, USA 2025, 90’
Mad Bills to Pay: (or Destiny, dile que no soy malo) Our Hero, Balthazar

Albert Birney’s OBEX, shot in a lo-fi aesthetic, is a full-blown journey into the unknown, where the line between gaming fiction and our surrounding reality begins to blur. The year is 1987, a time when computer technology is still in its infancy. The main character, Conor (played by the director himself) is a classic loner, a young man who spends all his days at home and avoids people. He is a genuine geek, with shelves packed with VHS tapes and endless hours spent in front of his computer. However, Conor will have to overcome his introversion and face the bizarre computer game OBEX, which triggers strange anomalies in his world. Will he make it out unscathed? OBEX will appeal not only to fans of experimental cinema but also to gamers who stayed up all night immersed in their favorite RPG titles. The film feels like a lost work by David Lynch, altered by a wildly inventive gaming and tech enthusiast. Disturbing yet soothing, OBEX has the potential to transform how viewers perceive what contemporary cinema can be.
