set 2: Seidelman and escape to the City (Confessions of a Suburban Girl, dir. Susan Seidelman, UK, USA 1992, 50'; Sex and the City, dir. Susan Seidelman, USA 1998, S01 E01, E10, 51')
+ Masterclass: Susan Seidelman
Susan Seidelman is one of few female directors who have successfully worked in the male-dominated environment since the 1980s, always making sure to include the womens’ perspective. Smithereens opened the Cannes red carpets to American independent filmmakers (Seidelman’s debut was the first indie production taking part in the main competition), Desperately Seeking Susan was the first female buddy movie, while Sex and the City gave a seat at the table to emancipated women.
During Seidelman’s masterclass we’ll go back in time to 1970s New York with its wild, rough aura. We will talk about film school, artistic circles and cinephiles who lived in old lofts and deserted townhouses. We will discuss the situation of women in the film world, both half a century ago and now, at the same time asking the question about the visibility and representation of female directors in the history of cinema.
