Confessions of a Suburban Girl, dir. Susan Seidelman, USA, Germany 1993, 50'
What does the girl next door dream of? A neatly trimmed lawn in front of a pastel house, a turkey in the oven and kids playing in the yard? Susan Seidelman grew up in the suburbs, as did many of the heroines of her films, yet they all harbor doubts about that environment. In the 1990s, after two decades of filmmaking, the director returns to her hometown and school friends to see what scripts life has written for them.
The Dutch Master, dir. Susan Seidelman, Germany, USA 1993, 28'
Behold the power of the female gaze: bored by the routine of her job at a dental office, Teresa (Mira Sorvino) brings a Dutch master’s painting to life and sets her fantasies in motion. Her lunchtime museum visits spark surprise and confusion in others, unease in her fiancé, and in her – excitement and, ultimately, desire.
American director and producer born in Philadelphia. Her debut feature, Smithereens, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Three years later, drawing inspiration from Jacques Rivette’s films, Seidelman directed Desperately Seeking Susan, a César-nominated movie starring Madonna. She helmed several episodes of the popular series Sex and the City. In 1993, her short The Dutch Master earned an Academy Award nomination.
