Hello Lonesome

Adam Reid, USA 2010, 91’
EUROPEAN PREMIERE

Bill lives alone on the city’s outskirts. He seems eccentric, obsessive, and self-confident, but these are only masks for his desperate loneliness. He works at home, sees no one, and his daughter will not take his calls. The only person he interacts with is Omar, the local deliveryman.

Eleanor, an elderly widow, lives alone in the suburbs. Her only joy is driving her pampered classic car. Eleanor’s life falls to pieces when she loses her license and has to sell the vehicle. Will her unexpected friendship with much younger neighbor Gary provide the solace she needs?

Gordon meets Debby on an Internet dating site. A fling turns into a close relationship, but their love will require responsibility and face serious trials with lifelong repercussions.

Though the three stories are unrelated in terms of narrative, they all sketch various views of loneliness, which is ultimately overcome through a relationship with another human being. The director treats his characters with a sense of humor and kindness without pathos, making Hello Lonesome a perfect ode to life.
