Mike is on a work furlough from prison. His days pass working as a locksmith and attempting to rebuild his relationship with his former girlfriend. All is well until Mike meets Margo and helps the girl break into her boyfriend’s house. She turns out to be a complete maniac convinced the boyfriend is cheating on her. Margo convinces Mike to follow the boyfriend, Charles. A normal day turns into a series of mounting trouble.
Todd and Brad Barnes’ film is a surprisingly fresh approach to a romantic comedy. It has none of the genre’s irritating aspects, like bored bourgeois getting into irritating relationships. Instead, it includes excellent and witty dialogues and freely crosses class and ethnic lines too often observed by romantic comedies, deftly smoothing over clashing elements. As a result, Homewrecker never loses pace. The film’s biggest highlight is the terrific acting by Ana Reeder and Anslem Richardson, which lends the entire plot credibility. It is not surprising the film received the Next Award at the 2010 Sundance Festival.
