This light and understated comedy exposes the epicenter of a world few knew existed: the community of voice trainers and voiceover actors responsible for the booming voices that thunder out over movie trailers. Carol is an aspiring voice-over actress struggling to make it in a man’s profession – one that is ruled by her father. In her directorial debut, Lake Bell adroitly exploits the comedic potential latent in a hermetic universe of sound, where everything is both as charming and awkward as a first date. From among the affairs of a dysfunctional family arises the theme of a mature feminist struggle to find one’s voice (!) while eschewing whining in favor of a commitment to fulfilling one’s dreams.
Lake Bell’s short film Worst Enemy premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Her acting credits include No Strings Attached (2011), It’s Complicated (2009), and HBO’s How to Make It in America (2010– 2011). Bell also co-stars in Katie Aselton’s Black Rock, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in the Park City at Midnight program. In a World... is her feature-long directorial debut.
