Two of the most important expressions of the American soul would likely be music and moving. Emmett Malloy’s documentary, Big Easy Express, attempts to capture both elements by filming an exceptional 2011 train tour by popular folk acts Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford & Sons playing hootenanny-filled dates in Oakland through New Orleans that rise to near mystic experiences. The camera goes unnoticed as bluegrass sounds rule the silver screen.
Director Emmett Malloy (b. 1972), Los Angeles where he also grew up) often works on set with his brother Brendan;the duo debuted with the sports comedy Out Cold (2001). The Emmetts’ passions are music and athletics, and they have directed music videos for Metallica, N.E.R.D., The White Stripes, Blink 182 and Goldfrapp. Music is the main theme of the documentary Big Easy Express.
