Above all, A Teacher is a character study of a woman failing to properly interact with her surroundings. At first the teacher just appears to be doing her job, and only later do we learn that this ordinary person is sleeping with one of her students. It is this introduction to the forbidden romance that flips the perspective and lets the film rise far above the average morality tale. Maybe the affair offers an escape from adult obligations. Fidell suggests the teacher’s broken relationship with her mother may be the cause, but provides no simple psychological answers. Sound and image are toned down in this disciplined narrative, while actress Lindsay Burdge plays a complex character you desire to watch, in spite of her reprehensible choices.
Hannah Fidell is a director, writer, and producer based in Brooklyn, and recently named one of Filmmaker magazine’s annual “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” A Teacher, which she wrote, directed, and co-produced with Kim Sherman, is her second feature film.
