Thirty-something Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) lives in an upscale L.A. neighborhood and spends her days meeting other privileged mothers and wives to the exclusion of any other world. Bored with her sex life, she lets friends drag her to a club where an encounter with stripper McKenna (Juno Temple) turns her life upside down. Soloway perfectly depicts a modern mésalliance in a Los Angeles that is adept at entrenching social divisions. She avoids the overused confines of marriage or even male-female relationships, using instead the context of a calculated liaison between a sex worker and a wealthy wife. In the neighborhood of Silver Lake McKenna is like an exotic toy, a domestic pet Rachel can play with to forget her enfolding boredom.
