Former prison inmate Joe lives in nowhere-in-particular South, a BFE where hope for a better tomorrow goes to die. He's trying not to repeat mistakes of the past and control the anger bubbling in his head, working in the forest and tending to good relationships with his subordinates. Joe invites Gary, a resourceful kid from a pathological family, into his crew and quickly becomes his father figure. When the boy's real father joins the job, family squabbles mix with old beef and the power plays become increasingly dangerous. In a world defined by violence, poverty and alcohol a brutal finale is only a matter of time. In Joe Nicolas Cage proves his nuanced acting skills, finds a worthy partner in Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life), while skillfully cast amateur actors hold their own (Gary Poulter). This time, David Gordon Green sets humor aside to spin a tale far darker and suffocating, though not without emotional, Malick-like, flashes.
