Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot

Gus Van Sant, USA, France 2018, 114’

Damsel Leave No Trace

Good news for fans of Gus Van Sant: one of the most important filmmakers in contemporary American cinema is returning to form. Just like his famous Good Will Hunting, Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot is both straightforward and revolutionary at the same time. It gets its rebellious charm from the main character, John Callahan, who is a real person and was a favorite of Robin Williams himself (it was in fact Williams who gave Van Sant the idea of making this film). Inspired by Callahan's autobiography, the film begins with a presentation of his turbulent youth and excessive drinking. An accident left Callahan paralyzed, but it didn't blunt his temperament. Wheelchair-bound, he decided to gain fame as a cartoonist with a wont for provocation and obscenity. Focusing mainly on the development of Callahan's career and his battle with addiction, Van Sant's work has been well received by American critics. In a favorable review, David Rooney of  The Hollywood Reporter called Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot an affecting movie that feels unmistakably like a labor of love.
