Leave No Trace

Debra Granik, USA 2018, 109’
Polish premiere
Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot Life Itself

Debra Granik's latest film looks like the flip side of her well-known Winter's Bone. While, in her earlier film, a teenage girl was trying to find her father, here the female lead is trying to free herself from the influence her father. The mission undertaken by Tom in Leave No Trace is difficult since the girl doesn't know any other life besides the one her father accustomed her to. Over the years, the traumatized war veteran convinced his daughter that she should avoid people and modern society. Will Tom be able to show him that he's wrong? In seeking an answer to this question, Granik avoids the sort of impetuousness and grandiloquence that are typical of many coming-of-agefilms. The calm tone in which she tells the story of girl's maturation does not in the least mean that Leave No Trace lacks expressiveness. That certainly isn't true of the lead actress, Thomasin McKenzie. Hiding behind the talented New Zealander' gentle face is a great deal of fortitude. It's not hard to imagine seeing the young actress enjoy a career similar to that of her predecessor from Winter's Bone, Jennifer Lawrence.
