The Seagull

Michael Mayer, USA 2018, 98’
Polish premiere
Life Itself White Boy Rick

"A comedy " is how Anton Chekhov described his play. This term does indeed accurately describe the nature of the events that take place in the setting of the Russian provinces, but it is also a cruel commentary, since each of the characters in The Seagull genuinely suffers. Some of them do nothing to hide this, while others try desperately to change their fate, which leads to a series of dramatic events. Nina dreams of a career on stage. She is given an opportunity to make her debut by Konstantin-an ambitious young playwright, Nina's beloved and Irina's son. The latter is an aging actress (a masterful performance by Annette Bening) known for mocking her son in public and narcissistically demanding compliments. Boris, her handsome lover and a talented writer, excels at improving Irina's self-esteem. To the delight of Masha, who is unhappily in love with Konstantin, Nina succumbs to Boris's charms. Unfulfilled and unhappy, they hurt one another, but they also love each other with a love the world has not seen. And they believe that everything is going to end happily and that the gun that appears in the first act won't have to be fired in the final one.
