Chained for Life Don't Leave Home

A 70-year old widow Diane (fantastic Mary Kay Place) lives a life full of sacrifices and commitments. Every single day she is helping homeless, sick and depressed people living in the provincial areas of Massachusetts. Meanwhile she visits her friend with cancer at the hospital and wonders where her 30-year-old addicted to heroine son (Jake Lacy) might be. Diane never complains or rests. She is taking everything as it is, without unnecessary questions or doubts. However, she misses out on the moment when the world around her falls apart. The movie of Kent Jones is a detailed, thoughtful study of a relationship between a mother and a son, which is far from perfection and marked by guilt, trauma and lack of trust. The damaged relations cannot be healed "just like that", even though they both are trying to do so in their own way. The director has resisted the temptation of making trivial simplifications and has risked everything. The result is honest, genuine, emotional. A lot of credit goes to the role of Mary Kay Place, but also to the experienced film maker. Film produced by Martin Scorsese.
