Cold interiors, a fences, and behind it, an unfriendly landscape. Ethel (Suzanne Fletcher) takes advantage of a car accident to escape from the psychiatric hospital where she is a resident. She takes the highways and backroads of America to her sister's (Melody Schneider) house. During her journey and her visit, we get to listen to her internal monologue, which enables us to understand how she sees and perceives the world around her. Sara Driver's poetic and disturbing film, You Are Not I, based on a story by Paul Bowles, was shot on black-and-white 16 mm film by Jim Jarmusch, the director's partner. Although this was only Driver's graduation film at the New York University School of the Arts, the French magazine " Cahiers du Cinéma" called it one of the best films of the 1980s, and it took on legendary status-both due to the fact that it was thought missing for a long time and thanks to the fact that it features some of New York's well-known bohemians: apart from Fletcher, iconic figures such as photographer Nan Goldin and writer Luc Sante also appear in the film.
Born in 1955, Sara Driver is a director. She studied in Greece and New York (with Spike Lee, among others), where she was one of the co-creators of the independent artistic scene. The director of the acclaimed You Are Not I, the cult Sleepwalk and When Pigs Fly, with Marianne Faithfull and Alfred Molina. She has also worked in theater and performance art, and produced (Permanent Vacation, Stranger Than Paradise), inspired (Broken Flowers, Only Lovers Left Alive) or appeared in films by Jim Jarmusch (Mystery Train).
