Do the Right Thing

Spike Lee, USA 1989, 120’
Blade Runner Eyes Wide Shut

One of the most important American films of the late 1980s, as well as a showcase for Spike Lee’s angry and passionate style. It’s a hot summer’s day in Brooklyn. The unbearable heat is ramping up the tension among already frustrated residents. A local pizzeria run by a descendant of Italian immigrants named Sala becomes ground zero for racial tensions. Several rash decisions and hastily spoken words lead to a conflict between Italians, Koreans, and African Americans. The resulting eruption of violence will change the protagonists’ peaceful lives forever. Lee’s film was widely praised for showing the mechanism that gives rise to racism in a psychologically credible way, devoid of pathos and unnecessary didacticism. It was for these reasons, among others, that Do the Right Thing received two Oscar nominations (for best original screenplay and for best actor for Danny Aiello, who played the role of Sala). The film was also acknowledged by Barack and Michelle Obama, who admitted years later that they had watched it on their first date.
