Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project

A television personality, a communist librarian who lost her job because of her convictions, a rebellious intellectual, a mother, a wife (twice), or a prolific archivist—who was Marion Stokes? Was she a pathological hoarder or a prophetic researcher trying to understand the nature of the media? The subject of Matt Wolf’s documentary recorded and archived news programs from American television stations from the time of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 until the end of her life. Following her death in 2012, a vast archive was found documenting almost 30 years of world history, as well as the transformation of the medium. Her collection included recordings from the Cold War, racial violence on the part of the American police, and Sinéad O'Connor tearing up a photo of the Pope in protest against pedophilia in the Church. Just as interesting as Stokes’ collection was her life–the subject of Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project—a life that reflects the turbulent history of the United States from racial segregation to Obama’s election as president.
