The Wall of Mexico

Zachary Cotler, Magdalena Zyzak, USA, Mexico 2019, 110’
The Giant To the Stars

The directorial duo of Polish-born Magdalena Zyzak and Zachary Cotler—no strangers to American Film Festival audiences—are back with their own version of Trading Places. This time, in spite of theories repeated by Donald Trump, it is a wealthy Mexican–American family that decides to wall off poor people who believe that the water flowing through the family’s property has miraculous powers. With the help of young actors, as well as some familiar faces—including Mariel Hemingway, the unforgettable Tracy from Manhattan—Zyzak and Cotler tell a mesmerizing story in which a new employee (Jackson Rathbone) watches rich kids sipping champagne on the lawn during their never-ending parties. He develops a growing interest in one of the girls who comes to the parties. Wicked, arrogant brats with sick minds, is how the white man describes them—having worked for the Aristas family for years, he is jealous of not being in their place. After all, Zyzak and Cotler’s film has no room for stereotypes.
