Honey Boy

Alma Har’el, USA 2019, 93’
Polish premiere
Ford v Ferrari Jojo Rabbit

Do you remember the leader of the gang of young outcasts in American Honey? Or John McEnroe in Borg vs McEnroe? Or shy Jerome from the Nymphomaniac? Before Shia LaBeouf became a truly versatile actor (he is best known Transformers franchise) he shot a ton of tv shows, became a child-celebrity and was a son of an abusive father who preyed on his kid’s fame. Alma Har’el, Shia’s friend since they made a documentary entitled LoveTrue, in Honey Boy adapted his own screenplay based on his experience and cast him in the role of his own alcoholic father. Honey Boy can be thus seen as a high-end psychotherapy: it is hard to imagine a better treatment than recreating your own trauma in front of the camera? Some lucky people can afford it and get international accolades for it, too.
