Flesh and Blood

Mark Webber, USA 2017, 90’
The Ever After The Place of No Words

An autobiographical drama inspired by the life of the director Marek Webber. The main character (the director’s namesake) is just getting out of prison. He moves in with his mother, who is living with his younger half-brother. He wants to stay on the straight and narrow, but his past demons—drug addiction and criminal activity—continue to haunt him. Flesh and Blood is a realistic and extraordinarily honest, therapeutic film that makes you realize how much childhood experiences have an impact on our adult lives and how difficult it is to remove the weight of toxic parents. The film contains many improvised scenes, blurring the border between feature and documentary. It reveals the most intimate family secrets. Appearing in the film are the director’s mother, Cheri Honkala, an advocate on behalf of the homeless and a former presidential candidate, as well as his brother and friends. They all play themselves. The film premiered at the SXSW Festival.

Mark Webber

Mark Webber is an American director, producer, screenwriter, and actor known for his roles in both commercial films such as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and independent projects, such as Dear Wendy and Broken Flowers. He grew up in a poor suburb of Philadelphia, where he and his mother were homeless for a long time. The experience of extreme poverty has had an impact on his career as a filmmaker, as he consistently situates himself on the margins of the mainstream. He has directed five full-length films, which are often based on his personal experiences, as well as those of his family and wife, the actress Teresa Palmer. Webber’s films have been presented at many independent film festivals, including SXSW and Sundance.
