A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Ana Lily Amirpour, USA 2014, 101’
The Florida Project

Drugs, prostitution and violence dominate the industrial Bad City, much like a Los Angeles stylized a ’la Frank Miller comics. The locals speak Farsi, the women are veiled and 1950s cars prowl the streets. This is the black-and-white world of the protagonist neurotic vampire, who is a mix of Louise Brooks and Thana from Abel Ferrara’s  Ms. 45. This mute fury hunts and metes out justice, all in the interest of local women. One night, after committing another crime, she runs into Arash, the Iranian James Dean, who becomes a drug dealer overnight. Ana Lily Amirpour’s film is certainly more than another cliché variation on the vampire theme. The director mixes genres, juggles movie references and conventions. No rules apply in the world she creates and the main character is like the heroines of Ulrike Ottinger’s Madame X – An Absolute Rules.
