Vox Lux

Brady Corbet, USA 2018, 114’
Us Where’d You Go, Bernadette

A second feature film (after a warmly received The Childhood of a Leader) directed by a well-known actor-turned-director Brady Corbet. And just like in his first film, Corbet tells the story about depraved individual who has exercised influence around herself since her childhood. The protagonist of Vox Lux is Celeste—a young pop star, the author of a hit song inspired by a school shooting. After many years, the grown-up artist (Natalie Portman) unsuccessfully tries to deal with temptations of fame. She also struggles to maintain balance in her private life, distorted by an ambiguous relationship with her manager (Jude Law). And to make matters worse, Celeste’s song creates a scandal which causes the demons of the past to resurface. Presented first at Venice Film Festival, Vox Lux accurately portrays the demons of contemporary show business. The guidance in this chaotic world is provided by Willem Dafoe, whose ironic and eloquent off-screen narration is a cherry on top of the movie.
