Dark City Beneath the Beat

TT The Artist, USA 2020, 65’
Crestone How to Overthrow the US Government (Legally)

Baltimore is a behemoth where crime is rampant. From another point of view, Baltimore is a jungle pulsating with electronic rhythms. This story can be told a thousand different ways, says the opening in Dark City Beneath the Beat. The filmmaker, TT The Artist, takes a positive approach. She shows Baltimore through the prism of the local club scene, which for the Black community is a source of not only entertainment but also good attitudes: music and dance offer an alternative, much healthier lifestyle to that of gangbanger or junkie. This tribute to artists and fans is something of a hybrid: perfunctory documentary scenes transition smoothly into flashy music videos, which are usually set in an urban landscape. Watch as Baltimore whirls and leaps in an attempt to escape from its dark side, as the beat sweeps across asphalt and concrete.

TT The Artist

TT The Artist was born Tedra Renee Wilson in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and later studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, a private art school in Baltimore. As a musician, she creates a sound blend of hip-hop, pop, and EDM. Dark City Beneath the Beat, her directorial debut, was meant to be part the program at this year’s SXSW festival, which was canceled, however, due to the covid-19 pandemic.
