All These Sons Ferguson Rises

Father James Martin is one of the most colorful figures in the American Catholic Church. As a Jesuit, he represents the so-called open church, which postulates a readiness to minister to those excluded by priests and bishops for years. He has authored books that popularize the faith with a sense of humor. In 2016, after the Orlando gay club massacre, he felt disappointed that church officials had not unequivocally condemned the murderer and felt it was his duty to teach the faithful about the rights of LGBTQ+ people, especially those who wish to be part of the Catholic Church. Martin's sermons formed a book called Building a Bridge, but also became the beginning of his troubles and attacks by not only the extreme right, but also some Church hierarchy. Does Father Martin, alone in his struggle, have a chance to overcome the prejudices of Catholics? Co-produced by Martin Scorsese, the film premiered at this year's Tribeca Festival.

Audience award nominated film.
