Erin Vassilopoulos' full-length debut tells the story of two twin sisters who, despite their similarities, live completely different lives. Marian (Alessandra Mesa) is an audacious rock star, while Vivian (Ani Mesa, Alessandra's twin) is a stable housewife. When Marian shows up at her sister's house after six years of absence, her mysterious return brings anxiety. However, the twin relationship quickly revives and takes on a rather unexpected dimension. The creepy, Lynchean story is an extension of the director's short project. The film’s 1980s atmosphere and aesthetics are perfectly complemented by Jessica Moss's synth-laden soundtrack. Superior feels like a John Dahl movie given a Twin Peaks vibe on a Hal Hartley budget, with just the odd dash of Old Hollywood thrown in for good measure, like the deliberately Rear Window-aping, flashbulb-popping finale. It might all get too pastiche-y, except that Vassilopoulos is quietly confident in the artificiality of her approach and leans into it, with mordant poker-faced wit and defiant stylishness, writes Jessica Kiang in Variety.
