Potato Dreams of America

Wes Hurley, USA 2021, 97’
Polish premiere
Mass The Novice

Based on the director's life experiences, Potato Dreams of America is the story of a young boy on the threshold of adulthood, who undergoes an accelerated course in maturity after leaving his native Soviet Union and moving to the United States. Vasily's mother marries a middle-class American and solemnly decides that all their American dreams will come true from then on. Life, meanwhile, brings a lot of disappointment and few joys. The atmosphere of despondency and hopelessness does not last long, however, because the filmmaker loves to experiment with genres, push the limits of good taste and acceptable humor, and introduce gentle camp elements into the plot. After all, what else can you call a situation in which a typical American father is played by none other than Dan Lauria - the archetypal father from The Wonder Years? Yes, it will be a very optimistic story about fulfilled dreams, supportive parents, polite friends from the bench and more or less successful coming-outs. Potato... premiered at SXSW.
