The Sanctity of Space
You recognize the explorer in Bradford Washburn at first sight, says one biographer of the American researcher, photographer and mountaineer. It was the pictures of inaccessible Alaskan mountains he had taken that inspired Renan Ozturk and Freddie Wilkinson to attempt to climb Moose's Tooth, considered one of Alaska's toughest ascents. The Sanctity of Space documents their journey and all its difficulties, but is rounded out by the story of Washburn's extraordinary life, where the past intertwines with the present. The fantastically photographed, suspenseful documentary operates like an adventure film and offers a meditation on fate, pushing barriers, overcoming life’s obstacles (Ozturk was badly injured during the shooting) and, ultimately, the irrelevance of human existence in the face of untamed nature. Will the challenge the filmmakers take prove beyond their reach?
Renan Ozturk
Renan Ozturk is an American mountaineer, visual artist, director and cinematographer who holds a degree in Biology from Colorado Collage. He has taken part in many expeditions. Ozturk’s ascent of Mount Meru in the Himalayas with Conrad Anker and Jimmy China is documented in the Sundance Award-winning documentary Meru. In 2019, he climbed Mount Everest as part of a search for the body of a British climber who disappeared from an expedition nearly a hundred years earlier.

Freddie Wilkinson
Freddie Wilkinson is an American mountaineer, mountain guide, journalist and author of books on mountain climbing. He reached his first peak at the age of 13, and since then has devoted his life to the mountains. The Sanctity of Space is his full-length directorial debut.
