The king of historic blockbusters, Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven),returns to one of his favorite themes and, drawing on the best-selling novel by Erik Jager, tells the story of the last duel sanctioned by authorities in medieval France. Marguerite (Jodie Comer) divulges to her husband (Matt Damon) that she was raped by his friend Jacques (Adam Driver). The penalty for this transgression is a duel to the death - the attacker has to face the defender of the woman’s honor. The script for The Last Duel was co-written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon (writing together for the first time since Good Will Hunting [Oscar 1998]), with collaboration from Nicole Holofcener (Walking and Talking). They decided to tell the story from three perspectives, like in Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon, which was a direct inspiration for the screenwriters. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where the director received the Glory to the Filmmaker award.
Nominated for the Oscar four times (Thelma and Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and The Martian), Ridley Scott is an English director and producer who works in Hollywood. At the beginning of his career, he made visually rich short commercials, including for Chanel and Macintosh. He studied at the Royal College of Art in London, and contributed to the establishment of the film department at that university. He has received nearly 50 awards (including BAFTA and Emmy) and honors around the world with nearly 100 nominations. This year he was awarded the Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the Venice Film Festival.
