A brilliant mix of thriller, dark comedy and revenge cinema that could serve as a showcase of the #metoo movement. The story of Cassie (the mesmerizing Carey Mulligan), a thirty-year-old single woman, reminiscent at first glance of Frances Ha's lost friend, from the film by Noah Baumbach, shows an overtly nice and shy girl who, at nightfall, turns into a warrior who challenges hordes of misogynists, sexists and potential rapists. Where will Cassie's trauma-inspired crusade lead her? Does the lonely avenger have any chance of confronting the beneficiaries of the patriarchal order? Emerald Fennell multiplies the questions, offers false leads and juggles twists and turns with a dexterity that makes it impossible to believe we’re watching a directorial debut. Moreover, the director reveals an impressive sensitivity to detail. After watching Promising Young Woman, the disturbing, instrumental cover of Toxic will be seared into viewers' minds at least as deep as the original.
