Six separate, subtly interconnected stories make up the latest film by Andrew Bujalski, the „godfather of mumblecore.” Shot during the pandemic, There There is an experiment with form and an engaging, naturalistic satire that combines humor with the small dramas of everyday life.
“To me, this was an essential cinema experiment,” Bujalski told IndieWire’s Eric Kohn in a recent interview. “It was something, to some degree, you could’ve done 100 or 50 years ago. I grew up with this notion that the camera is a documentary device and editing is a narrative device. It’s kind of bullshit when you cut between things. This was a way to take something that had always fascinated me about editing and push it to an extreme, then build a story around that.”
Andrew Bujalski was born in Boston in 1977. He is a director, screenwriter and actor, one of the most important filmmakers of the American indie scene. Andrew studied at Harvard University, where Chantal Akerman was his thesis supervisor. Bujalski's work is sometimes compared to the films of John Cassavetes or Mike Leigh due to their realism and improvised scenes. The film Funny Ha Ha garnered him the „Someone to Watch” Independent Spirit Award, while his Computer Chess won the Alfred P. Sloan Award at Sundance.
