Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach, USA 2019, 136’
Polish premiere
Late Night The Irishman

Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and Charlie (Adam Driver) are a couple of artists in love. They work together, live together, and raise their son together. They know everything about one another—where they leave their dental floss, the sorts of presents they like the most, what they like to read and what they can’t stand, which one of them likes to watch television. Having known each other for a number of years already, they can recognize even the smallest gestures and grimaces, and they know exactly what to expect. Being together, they’ve almost grown into a single organism, although they both have their own hidden dreams and ambitions buried deep inside. And the moment has finally arrived for those dreams and ambitions to come out. All you need is one good offer to—at least for a little while—break free of your routine, to feel the wind in your hair, to experience freedom. Is this the end for this perfect couple? Baumbach discusses in a tender and with sensitive way a long-term relationship in which the partners are starting to feel pressure. How should they deal with the growing distance between them in order to avoid suffering? He doesn’t find an answer to this question, but his search takes him closer to his viewers than ever before. Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert.com called Baumbach’s film  masterful and the performances by Johansson and Driver  stunning.
