The winners of the 13th American Film Festival in Wrocław
The on-site part of the 13th American Film Festival (8-13 November) is coming to an end. The winners of this year’s AFF were presented at today’s closing gala. As per tradition, the festival audiences took the role of the jury by voting for their favorites.
Among the 13 feature films from the Spectrum section, the viewers chose Acidman directed by Alex Lehmann.
Acidman is a meditation on facing loneliness, the fear for aging parents and a melancholic longing for the simplicity of childhood. Lehmann, the creator of the great Blue Jay, talks about a different kind of love this time. The film Acidman can be seen at the cinema today at 21:45, the film is also available online via Nowe Horyzonty VOD platform.
Of all 8 documentaries presented in the American Docs section, the audience awarded The Pez Outlaw directed by Amy Bandlien Storkel and Bryan Storkel.
The Pez Outlaw is the story of the most notorious smuggler of collectible PEZ dispensers. A story about a rebellion against corporate greed, where millions of dollars are at stake, and at the same time an amazing documentary, which takes place on two continents. The last screening of The Pez Outlaw is today at 21:30.
The winning film from the Spectrum section received an award of $10,000 – funded by the New Horizons Association, while the winner of the American Docs section received $5,000 – an award funded by BNY Mellon.
During the on-site part of AFF, viewers saw a total of 88 feature films, 37 of which were shown in Poland for the first time. Nina Menkes - director, filmmaker, whose work is the epitome of American independent cinema, was a special guest at the festival. Menkes is also this year's winner of the Indie Star Award.
