Born in South Korea and raised in Canada, the director graduated from Columbia University in the United States. Prior to making Past Lives based on her own experiences, she was part of the writing team for The Wheel of Time series and a renowned playwright. Her plays, Endings and Tom & Eliza, received nominations for prestigious awards, while her experimental piece The Seagull on the Sims 4 brought together various art forms, becoming one of the most surprising adaptations of Chekhov in history.
