What if we just dropped everything and moved to Montana? Grace and Jackson (Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson) must have asked themselves that question once. But unlike thousands of American city dwellers who only dream about escaping, they actually did it. A weathered wooden cabin deep in the forest became their imagined sanctuary and a place to start a family. But life rarely mirrors a glossy photo in a catalog, and in Lynne Ramsay’s vision, idyllic scenes often ensconce a rotten, blackened root beneath the surface. That root begins to show shortly after the birth of their child. Euphoria gives way to routine, and carefree liberation is slowly replaced by new roles and responsibilities. Grace soon slips into depression, suspended in the void between a lost identity and the yet-unformed role of motherhood. Jackson first fails to notice her pain, then remains stubbornly helpless in its face. This impasse forms the core tension of Die, My Love, but Ramsay is no couples’ therapist. She is a brutal observer of pain, often with a sadistic edge. With her heart on the side of women who suffer alone, she crafts her own Mother! — a tragedy about postpartum depression as a curse of meaninglessness. The annihilation of love comes alive through a devastating performance by Jennifer Lawrence and the haunting echo of a Joy Division ballad.

Scottish filmmaker and screenwriter Lynne Ramsay is recognized as one of the most distinctive female voices in contemporary arthouse cinema. A regular guest at the Cannes Film Festival, she returns with each new project, though she works infrequently, often with long gaps between films. Her sensorially rich work explores trauma and the quiet horror lurking beneath everyday life. She is also a mother.
