Does true love always have to mean madness? Intense sensations, oblivion, and an eruption both metaphorical and, here, quite literal, volcano? Although Bethany (Charli XCX, whose album Brat is still an earworm) once believed that, she apparently no longer remembers. Her staid relationship with Rob (Will Madden) has a chance for even greater stability, especially since he plans to propose during a short trip. Their plans change with a volcanic eruption and the couple stays in Warsaw. Bethany knows well what that means: Nel (Lena Góra), who fascinates her, must be somewhere nearby. In his latest film celebrating Poland, Pete Ohs (director of The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick, also shown at this year’s TAURON AFF) slowly roams Warsaw, stumbling on uneven pavements and watching young women with pasts. The feelings experienced by the heroines, as always in such stories, are complicated, especially since in seeking one’s own freedom, it is easy to hurt the ones you love, but this capricious, nocturnal Warsaw has never looked better. After all, as Ohs claims, it is far more romantic than Paris.
Peter Ohs is a filmmaker and music video director who gained broader recognition with his debut feature Everything Beautiful Is Far Away (2017), starring Julia Garner. The film earned awards at festivals such as the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Tacoma Film Festival. His Warsaw-shot feature Erupcja, starring Charli XCX and Lena Góra, was presented as part of the US in Progress program at the 14th edition of AFF.
