Meet Jerry Kane (Nick Offerman) — a self-taught philosopher, an anti-establishment crusader and charismatic figure in the sovereign citizen movement (SovCits). With the fervor of a backwoods preacher, he roams the countryside preaching that the government is nothing more than a corrupt corporation, unworthy of obedience or respect. Jerry gains a surprising following, but no one is more influenced than his teenage son, Joe. As Jerry drifts further into conflict with the law, Joe faces a defining decision: rebel against his father or join him on a quixotic crusade against the system. Inspired by real events that once made national headlines, Sovereign marks the feature debut of Christian Swegal, who uses this father-son conflict as a springboard for a broader meditation on masculinity, moral authority, and generational disillusionment. Blending domestic drama with shades of thriller, action, and even a modern western, Swegal delivers a confident, sharply crafted portrait of ideological obsession and its ripple effects.
Director and screenwriter Christian Swegal works successfully across both film and television. He graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and, as a writer, has collaborated with filmmakers including Werner Herzog. Sovereign marks his feature directorial debut.
