Futuristic nostalgia in full swing. Susan Seidelman leaves her beloved New York to shoot in Florida – in the 1980s still a land of sunny retirement communities and pastel bungalows filled with sun-seeking seniors. Amid these pleasant surroundings, an unusual experiment unfolds: Jeff Peters (John Malkovich) brings to life Ulysses (also Malkovich!), an android designed for a solitary seven-year space mission. To promote the project and make the public more comfortable with the idea, the director of CHEMTEC, the facility where the android was created, hires Frankie (Ann Magnuson), head of a creative agency and marketing maven. Modern and stylish, she arrives at CHEMTEC’s HQ and gets down to work, all the more enthusiastically since the android seems far more intriguing than the men she usually encounters. Through Frankie, Ulysses, previously isolated, discovers that there’s a world beyond CHEMTEC, one that’s full of experiences worth savoring.
