Seth and Evan have never had a summer like this before. Although they’re still in high school, the last days of their senior year carry a unique, completely one-of-a-kind vibe for them. Instead of books, their backpacks are filled with beer cans, but as they open them while skipping school, the familiar carefree taste of each sip is fading. Soon they’ll head off to different universities, parting ways for the first time in the history of their close friendship.
Frightened by the threshold of adulthood, they feel that only losing their virginity will save them from being labeled losers on college campuses. Whether they care more about the sex itself or their status in the peer hierarchy resonates throughout almost the entire two hours of this film, dripping with youthful frustrations.
Developed by Rogen and Goldberg since their own high school days in Vancouver, Superbad fascinates with its authentic coming-of-age story, comedic sharpness, and depth of reflection on boyhood maturation. More relevant today than at its initial release, the film offers a nuanced exploration of the origins of toxic masculinity and internalized sexism, demonstrating that these serious themes can be addressed with both humor and empathy.
