When I’m a Moth

Zachary Cotler, Magdalena Zyzak, USA 2019, 91’
European premiere

A cryptobiographical story about a few days in the life of one of the most influential women in U.S. history. After graduating from college, Hillary (the phenomenal Addison Timlin) works at a fish canning plant in Alaska during the summer of 1969. On her way to work, she meets two Japanese men, Mitsuru (Toshiji Takeshima) and Ryohei (TJ Kayama), with whom she establishes a close relationship. She tells them about her boundless political ambitions and reveals that she went to Alaska to learn about the life of so-called ordinary people. In Timlin’s interpretation, the young Hillary is attractive and intelligent, but also a cool and dispassionate person focused on a far-reaching goal and interested only in the path to the upper echelons of power. Her romance with Ryohei is accompanied by Lyn Moncrief’s melancholic cinematography, which is very much in tune with the landscape. Cotler and Zyzak’s surprising film establishes a dialogue between America’s past and present, as it searches for the sources of today’s divisions in the values and attitudes of the elite growing up in the 1960s. Like Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood, When I’m a Moth shows us 1969 from an intimate perspective that breaks with clichés and stereotypical images of the era.
