The Climb

Michael Angelo Covino, USA 2019, 94’
Polish premiere
The Art of Self-Defense The Farewell

Friendship between men can be a climb. Kyle and Mike, both in their 30s (played by the picture’s director and the scriptwriter) are cycling up the hill side by side while suddenly Mike reveals he slept with the fiancée. Is that the end of their relationship? Not really, but the wedding gets cancelled. The two men will live through lots of drama, heartbreak and laughter together. The Climb was initially a short under the same title, which was screened at Sundance FF in 2017 to raving reviews. It was extended into feature after adding next chapters of Mike and Kyle’s friendship (based on their experiences but not autobiographical as they say) creating a prime buddy comedy as if Judd Apatow’s style was put through a filter of European auteur film (see the surreal musical scenes or masterly long shots). Covino’s debut premiered at Cannes Certain Regard section and was awarded Coup de Ceur prize and subsequently a number of awards at Festival of American Film in Deauville.
