The Other Side of the Wind

Orson Welles, France, Iran, USA 2018, 122’

The story takes place over the course of one evening, so Welles figured he could shoot it in just a few weeks. It took him a lot longer, six years in fact, from 1970 to 1976, and the film saw the light of day, after resolving problems of both a financial and artistic nature, 33 years after the death of the director who left many hours of material and only a partially edited film. A team of producers, editors and technicians managed to tame this huge mass of celluloid and create a harmonized epic that has a loose but logical structure. We meet the main character, director Jake Hannaford (John Huston, who with the cigar sometimes looks like Welles himself), from many different perspectives, achieved not with the help of flashbacks as in the famous Citizen Kane, but thanks to camera work heightened by the introduction of two autothematic narratives: a documentary filmed at Hannaford's birthday party and his unfinished film titled The Other Side of the Wind. This multiplication of cameras and points of view resembles the account of many witnesses trying to unravel the mystery of rubella.

Orson Welles

Orson Welles is a cinematic legend, an extremely colorful and complex figure - on the one hand a well-known auteur and star, on the other an undefined character, often analyzed only through the lens of completed works. The author of Citizen Kane seems to be the most characteristic example of an unfulfilled artist. His enormous potential resulted in relatively few films, which highlights the conflict between the outstanding artist, cinema as an art, and the industry and commercial nature of the movies.
