Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Richard Linklater, USA 2019, 109’
Vox Lux

Bernardette (Cate Blanchett) used to be a defiant superstar of the world architecture. She hasn’t worked in her field for years; instead she chose to focus on her family and raising her daughter, Bee (Emma Nelson’s debut). Pissed off at the whole world, Bernardette tries to hide from herself the fact that quiet family life in Seattle does not make her happy. A series of unfortunate events makes Bernardette run away, and so, she leaves her loved ones behind without saying a word and leaves to Antarctica. Bee and her father (Billy Crudup) will not only have to find her mother, they will also need to repair the crumbling family. Adapted from Maria Semple’s novel (published also in Poland) mixture of family movie and comedy, with a touch of psychoanalytic drama. It is a tale which is like its heroine—somewhat eccentric. But even if Bernardette is difficult to appreciate—we meet her as an antisocial, tiresome egoist—it’s impossible not to root for her when she leaves on a journey to find happiness and artistic fulfillment.
